Film Update (3)...

We have finished our film after two sessions in the half term from 10-4, we used computers in a different room because they were quicker and we were therefore able to complete our film in a good amount of time. I think the music and special effects go really well with the piece and we are all very pleased with the film as a whole.

Film update (2)...

This weekend, Jack and Becca came to uphill again and we finished our filming! We were so cold and we didn't have the plate to put onto the tripod so the camera held still, so we decided to re-film everything and it worked out alot better. This is because even though we wanted specific shots to be shaky, we wanted the others to be straight so that it contrasted during the film! We are now onto editing and have uploaded our film and saved it into a project so we can edit it now.

Film Research...

Apocalypse Now (1979)

How does the director/producer 'hook' the audience?
Starts with a a beautiful tropical landscape which is then blown up with napalm - violence, vietnam war, pointless destruction?!
What is the man going to do? - concerned for him.

What techniques are used?
Images of war layered with images of character's face and reality
Constantly haunted by images of war
Obsessed with it
Deep psychological effect
Starts with a song and sounds of helicopters and voice over

Blade Runner (1982)

How does the director/producer 'hook' the audience?
The titles are plain and ordinary to create tension
Written b/g info. City scape from above with fire coming up from it, look polluting, dangerous, threatening and futuristic

What techniques are used?
Cuts from city scape to eye with the reflection of the city fire, this tells us that eyes are important because the story is about you can only tell a replicant by looking into their eyes!
Mood and atmosphere is tense, only voices in the interview, HF cant be understood, frustrating
Dark outside, raining hard, oppressive,no nature!

28 Days Later

How does the director/producer 'hook' the audience?
Enigma - what is rage?
Dr. is very scared showing us that we should be scared
WHERE IS EVERYONE? WHY EVACUATION? WHY DESTRUCTION?

What techniques are used?
Jumpy camera angles
Short shots
Quick cuts
Loud, undefined noise
B/g music
Dark
All of this creates tension and it becomes extremely intense

NO sound! Isolation, intensity, nothingness
Music starts, he is becoming more tense, the louder and faster the music becomes signifies his confusion and worry

A clockwork orange

How does the director/producer 'hook' the audience?
Alex is staring at you!
Why are they dressed like that?
Why are they drinking milk?
Why is no one talking to eachother in the milk bar?!
WEIRD SET - grabs your attention
Why are they wearing makeup like that?

What techniques are used?
A simple, tracking shot - reveals everything slowly allowing us to ask questions and to build tension
Voice over of alex explaining what they are doing in the milk bar, but nothing is clear
Reflects a very different society yet still the same
Eery/creepy music to show insecurity

Pan's Labyrinth

This is another favourtie film of mine as it shows reality twisted with dark magic, completely mesmerising and visually stunning!

Alfred Hitchcock - Psycho

This is my favourite film from Alfred Hitchcock, the suspense and intensity is undeniable intreaguing.

We researched his methods to find out how Alfred Hitchcock created suspense, and the effects he used to lead up to it. I believe this helped our understanding of how to create suspense. Here are just a few techniques he used:

- showing the audience what the characters dont see
- point of view editing
- zoom in on facial expressions
- dialogue means nothing when it comes to creating tension
- characters must break the cliche
- use of humour adds to tension
- two things happening at once quickens pace and heightens tension
- suprise and twist

This is our preliminary task video which was to film someone walking through a door, we were quite successful in this and worked together well...

Textual Analysis/Film Research

Se7en (1995)
Film about two homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic "John Doe" sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills -- one sin at a time. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer's terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. The seasoned and cultured Sommerset researches the Seven Deadly Sins in an effort to understand the killer's modus operandi while green Detective Mills scoffs at his efforts to get inside the mind of a killer...

Progress of Thriller Movie...

Today...me,Jack Dowling and Becca Blythe did our first story board for our Thriller today and it went very successfully as our ideas went smoothly together and we are very happy with our first draft. Jack then told me and Becca of two films he had seen that had good credits, 'Splinter' & 'The Children'. Then Becca came back to my house and we watched 'Seven' and decided the opening credits were very effective and the lighting effects in the movie made it very intense and kept us on edge, we decided this would be good research for our film and that we would include this whilst filming our movie!
